Open Communities' mission is to educate, advocate, and promote just and inclusive communities in north suburban Chicago. We seek to eradicate housing discrimination, in all of its forms and against all persons, because of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, disability, familial status, or source of income. Housing is a human right; fair housing is the law. To further our goal of equal housing opportunities for all, Open Communities engages in activities that encourage fair housing practices, including landlord-tenant and foreclosure counseling services, community education, and advocacy to make our communities more welcoming for everyone.
Community Navigators build professional relationships with previous Open Communities clients and community partners. They do this by understanding fair housing laws, training with eviction prevention resources, and learning how to avoid the unauthorized practice of law. They also assist the Program Manager with developing a referral list of attorneys and other resource providers.
Community Navigators attend community events to inform citizens about Open Communities programs. They also host in-person and virtual educational workshops for communities and partners at various multipurpose community spaces.
Community Navigators make follow-up calls to community members and partners to assure critical services are provided in the office. They perform administrative duties such as processing eviction prevention documents, applications for emergency assistance, and outcome assessments.
