Open Communities' mission is to educate, advocate and organize to promote just and inclusive communities in north suburban Chicago. Open Communities seeks part-time community navigators to assist in advocating and providing referrals for individuals formerly incarcerated throughout Cook County’s suburbs.
Reports to the Assistant Director of Housing Counseling and Education
Responsible for informing community stakeholders, and justice impacted individuals on eviction laws by hosting eviction prevention presentations, attending community events, and assisting in the delivery of trainings and outreach.
Community Navigators will build professional relationships with previous Open Communities clients and community partners.
Community Navigators will develop an understanding of fair housing laws, train with eviction prevention resources, and learn how to avoid the unauthorized practice of law.
Community Navigators will assist the Program Manager with developing a referral list of attorneys and other resource providers.
Community Navigators will attend community events to inform citizens about mediation opportunities and eviction prevention the Open Communities provides free of charge in the far north and south suburbs of Cook County.
Community Navigators will host educational workshops for communities and partners; both virtually as well as in person at various multipurpose community spaces.
Community Navigators will provide follow-up calls to community members and partners to assure key services are provided.
Community Navigators will assist in the eviction prevention by processing documents and applications for emergency assistance.
Community Navigators will complete an outcome assessment that measures the impact of their work including the number of volunteer hours, how many community members reached, referrals for legal or housing assistance programs, and accessing emergency services.
Must be formerly incarcerated or a victim of housing discrimination. Experience in service management, including organizing, problem solving, and advocating. Ability to communicate effectively and maintain good relations with clients and employees. Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially spreadsheets, database and reporting tools. Excellent communication, writing, problem solving, and organization skills.
This position requires a high-school diploma (or equivalent).

Generally, this position operates in multiple community offices throughout Cook County; however, this position may also be required to work from Evanston site in Cook County. This position requires a flexible schedule, but typical hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; however, evening hours, including weekends and holidays, may also be required. Car or access to a vehicle needed for outreach and client appointments when applicable.
