GOOD NEWS FOR WELCOMING COMMUNITIES
“We celebrate a victory for people with disabilities,” said Gail Schechter, executive director of Open Communities, in our press release announcing the settlement. “And by upholding their fair housing rights, we also uphold the rights of all people…”
This is the largest fair housing settlement in Evanston in more than 25 years since Open Communities and the City of Evanston successfully sued five real estate firms for racial steering and discriminating against African American home buyers.
In November, Open Communities also settled an accessibility lawsuit with Ryan Companies, which agreed to make $2.7 million in alterations to more than 900 apartments in 10 housing complexes in Illinois and Iowa.
